HMSI inaugurates third assembly line in Vithalapur plant, company adds capacity to manufacture 6.5 lakh two-wheelers in Gujarat – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: Automobile major, Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI) Limited on Monday announced that it has inaugurated the third assembly line at its fourth two-wheeler manufacturing plant at Vithalapur, situated some 79km from Ahmedabad. The Vithalapur plant has added an additional manufacturing capacity of some 6.5 lakh units. This will take the plant’s total capacity to 19.7 lakh units per annum from the existing capacity of 13.2 lakh units per annum.
Tsutsumu Otani, president, managing director and CEO, HMSI, said, “To serve customers more efficiently with speed, undertaking this capacity expansion plan will increase HMSI’s total annual production volumes significantly. HMSI’s Gujarat plant produces scooter models for domestic as well as export markets which will help us to continue leading the trend of scooterization not just in India but across the globe.”
Some of the best-selling models of HMSI’s gearless two-wheeler segment including the Honda Activa, Dio, Activa 125 and Dio 125 are manufactured at the Vithalapur plant in Gujarat. The plant also has a dedicated engine line that serves as a base to manufacture global engines (for 250cc & above category two-wheelers) to serve the global demand, like Thailand, US, Europe, Japan, among others.
The expansion of the plant will further add employment opportunities and the company said it also plans to increase its female workforce in the area.
The company is also actively working towards its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 at the Gujarat plant. It currently uses 75% electrical power from renewable energy sources (wind and solar power), utilizes rainwater harvesting and is a zero liquid discharge and zero waste to landfill manufacturing facility.
